Solar Power Installation Is Easier Than You Think

January 10th, 2010

This snowy winter in the UK has emphasised that fact that climate is slowly changing and we more and more need to be looking at looking after our planet. I know that I now walk more and think about trips out in the car before I go. I try combine errands and shopping trips into one large trip rather than keep popping out every time the whim takes me.

The thing many people are looking at now is home solar power installation. When this technology was first discovered it was very underdeveloped and wasn’t ready for market. Solar power did capture the imagination of product developers and now we have a myriad of manufacturers launching their latest solar power products. The point has been reached where there is a reasonably level playing field in terms of useability and performance. There are no really bad solar power panels out there.

The other great thing is that prices have come down enormously bringing more homes within the budget of a full solar panel system. This also due to the economies of scale. More buyers bring with them lower prices. The final aspect of solar power installation is that the previously highly technical installation techniques have been replaced with a more off the shelf system. Manufacturers realised that they would sell more product if it was more accessible to installers and home builders. As long as they kept the product out of reach they wouldn’t sell enough.

For myself I am currently planning a large self build solar power installation to go on my lean to extension. I intend to have solar powered electricity as well as a large solar hot water unit. By the end of 2010 it should all be done. The information I am following for the solar power part is from Green DIY Energy who market a home buyers instruction course. This was really convinced me to do this myself rather have an expensive professional solar installation. They main reason for doing this is purely cost. I will do the work for about 10% of the cost of having it done for me.
